A standby master is valuable when losing the primary controller would interrupt an important water service. In a YS620 multi-pump design, the normal master reads pressure and coordinates auxiliary drives. A second pressure-equipped drive can be configured as the standby master so it can take control if the primary master fails.
Redundancy does not make every component failure-proof, but it removes one obvious control dependency from the pump group.
The decision should be based on the cost of interruption, not only the cost of an additional sensor or drive.
| Design point | Single master | Master plus standby master |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure-reading controller | One | Two configured master-capable drives |
| Response to master failure | Manual intervention may be required | Standby can assume system control |
| Wiring and setup | Simpler | Additional sensor and role configuration |
| Commissioning tests | Normal sequence tests | Normal sequence plus takeover tests |
| Best fit | Noncritical or easily serviced systems | Higher-continuity applications |
Auxiliary-drive fault handling is separate: the YS620 architecture can skip an unavailable auxiliary and call the next available unit. The project should test both auxiliary bypass and master takeover.
How quickly must pressure recover after a controller fault? Will the standby master have an independent pressure sensor? Are the sensors installed so one local mechanical problem cannot affect both? How will alarms reach operators? What is the safe state if communication is lost?
These answers should be recorded in the functional description before parameters are set.
For a reliable quotation, provide a pump schedule, motor nameplates, pressure range, sensor signals, sequence of operation and required fault response. QINMAO can evaluate the YS620 configuration together with OEM branding, packaging and application-specific parameter requirements.
Adding a standby master protects against some controller failures, but a common pressure tapping, power source, isolation device or communication cable may still stop the station. Draw a fault tree and decide which failures the project must tolerate. The required level depends on the cost and safety impact of lost water pressure.
The YS620 manual describes both master-capable drives as pressure equipped in the redundant arrangement. Decide whether they use separate transmitters and sensing points. Two sensors on one blocked impulse line do not provide complete independence. The control philosophy should also define what happens if their readings disagree.
Calculate the available flow with the largest required component unavailable. A controller may transfer successfully while the remaining pumps still cannot meet peak demand. State whether the design needs 100 percent capacity, a reduced emergency capacity or only controlled shutdown.
During acceptance testing, operate the system at a representative demand and simulate loss of the normal master using an approved method. Record pressure drop, takeover time, alarms and the pumps that remain active. Restore the master and verify that control returns according to the intended sequence without conflicting commands.
Redundant equipment must be maintained. Rotate or test the standby function at planned intervals, keep its sensor calibrated and ensure parameter revisions are applied to both master-capable drives. A standby unit that has never been exercised may provide only theoretical protection.
Is a standby pump the same as a standby master? No. A standby pump provides hydraulic capacity; a standby master provides control capability. One device may serve both roles only when the system is designed and configured that way.
Does every project need two masters? No. Use redundancy where interruption risk justifies the extra equipment, wiring and testing.
QINMAO presents the YS620 and YS820 as application products, not merely frequency converters. The recommendation process connects motor data to the pump curve, required pressure, sensor and operating sequence. This is how a VFD specialist prevents an electrically plausible choice from becoming a poor hydraulic solution.
Technical expertise is visible in the questions asked before quotation. What current is shown on the motor plate? At what flow and head must the pump operate? Which pressure signal is available? Will the drive work alone, coordinate auxiliaries or communicate with another system? What should happen after low water or a failed sensor?
For overseas OEMs, consistent engineering is also part of the product. Approved parameters, wiring information, labels and after-sales diagnostics should follow the exact pump model. This disciplined method supports customization without sacrificing traceability.
Multi-pump control needs a written sequence of operation. It should define which drive reads pressure, when another pump is added, when it is removed, how pumps rotate and what happens after a drive, sensor or communication fault. A diagram showing master, standby-master and auxiliary roles prevents ambiguity during wiring and service.
Hydraulic details matter as much as RS485 settings. Pumps connected in parallel need suitable curves, correctly selected non-return valves and a header that can carry the combined flow. If one pump is much larger than the others, the staging thresholds may require special review.
Acceptance testing should cover minimum demand, peak demand, rapid valve changes, sleep, wake, pump rotation, auxiliary bypass and restart after a power interruption. A redundant design is not proven until the takeover and fault responses have been observed.
Send one organized request containing supply voltage and phase, motor plates, pump curves, required flow and pressure, sensor data, number of pumps and a simple system diagram. Add operating hours, environmental conditions and the required response to low water, high pressure or component failure.
For an OEM/ODM request, include expected quantities by model, destination markets, brand artwork, packaging scope and required compliance documents. Mark requirements that are mandatory and those that are preferences. This prevents commercial customization from being confused with a new electrical design.
Ask QINMAO to return a model recommendation with the technical assumptions, current rating, control mode and information still missing. A clear gap list is more professional than an immediate quotation based on incomplete data.
Record a baseline after the system is stable: supply voltage, motor current, output frequency, target pressure, actual pressure and active pump roles. Add photographs of the motor plate, sensor label and final wiring. This becomes the reference for future troubleshooting and proves that the package was tested with known conditions.
The handover should include an approved parameter backup and a short explanation of normal sleep, wake and alarm behavior. Overseas customers value documentation that allows a local technician to collect useful evidence before contacting the factory.
QINMAO can use this information to support YS620 and YS820 applications more efficiently. It also helps OEMs maintain one repeatable configuration across production batches, which is an important part of being recognized as a professional VFD supplier.
